The trend of having at least four teams earn their way back to the playoffs has been consistent throughout the changes to the playoff format. In 2020, we saw the expansion to a 14-team playoff format. Then, we had seven teams earn spots in 2020 and 2021 that didn’t the year before, and six in 2022 and 2023. Also, since 1976, at least one team has won its division after missing the previous year’s postseason except in 1976 and 2024.

Here are the teams that missed the 2025 NFL playoffs for the 2024 NFL regular season. The Seattle Seahawks and Cincinnati Bengals were the only two teams to miss with records over .500 last season. The Raiders, Patriots, and Jaguars had the fewest wins at four last year. It will be interesting to watch and see which teams earn their way back during the upcoming NFL regular season.
