RHOA’s Dwight Eubanks Breaks Down Over Prostate Cancer Diagnosis—Says He Was ‘Emotional’ After Hearing the News
Dwight Eubanks is facing the fight of his life — and using his voice to help others do the same.
The former Real Housewives of Atlanta fan favorite and celebrity hairstylist revealed to People that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year. The news, he says, came as a complete shock. “I was shocked, I was angry,” Dwight, 64, told the outlet in an interview published June 2. “I was just emotionally a wreck.”
Known for his stylish flair and recurring appearances as a friend of the cast on Bravo’s hit series, Dwight admitted the diagnosis hit him hard — especially with how the word “cancer” has long been portrayed. “When you hear the word cancer, you freak out. I’m human,” he said.
“Society has told us that cancer was just devastating and, you know, you just have days to live. So, of course I freaked out — and I think I’m still freaked out.”
Though he experienced no symptoms, Dwight decided to take advantage of a free health screening at his church back in January. A week later, his doctor delivered the life-altering diagnosis. By April, a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test confirmed the cancer. What stunned Dwight even more, however, was learning that signs of the illness may have shown up years earlier — but went unnoticed.
“I was like, ‘Are you kidding me?’” he recalled. “This was back in 2022 and nobody said anything to me. [The doctor] just said, ‘You’re undetectable, so you are fine.’ Never said anything about my prostate.”
Dwight, who is HIV positive, has been undergoing biannual checkups for years and remains proactive about his health. But he says this moment has shown him how important it is for patients to ask questions and monitor their own medical records. “I can’t say what should have, could have, or would have been,” he noted, “but I just have to embrace where I am now and be grateful and try to help somebody else along the way.”
With a team of four doctors — including two urologists, a specialist, and his primary physician — Dwight says he’s still exploring treatment options, but remains optimistic.
“We are going to figure it out,” he said. “I feel good. I’m comfortable, and I’m forever grateful to have such a team and support.” In honor of Men’s Health Month, Dwight recently partnered with ZERO Prostate Cancer as a national ambassador to raise awareness among men — particularly Black men, who are disproportionately affected — about the importance of early screening.
“What’s amazing about it is that I feel like a higher power has been preparing me for this moment,” he said. “I could not be silent with this because it could help people if they just get tested and don’t wait too long.”
