Netflix has been known to cancel plenty of shows, but the streaming platform might be bringing back one of its best series for a new season.

Putting David Fincher in charge of a TV series about studying the minds of serial killers just seems like a natural fit, so it was no surprise when Mindhunter emerged as one of the best series that Netflix had to offer. However, after season two premiered on the platform in 2019, fans have been left hanging, wondering when Mindhunter Season 3 might become a reality. The possibility is closer than we might think.
Mindhunter star Holt McCallany recently did an interview in which he teases the possibility of the show returning. McCallany told CBM: “So look, you know, I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it’s just a chance. I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts.”

How likely is this to happen? McCallany elaborated, “So I think that in terms of dates and logistics, it could all be worked out, but it has to do, you know, with David really having the time and the inclination and being happy, you know, with the material. And, you know, that’s a big question mark.”
Both seasons of Mindhunter have well over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s hard to argue against making more seasons when the results are good.
Netflix and David Fincher have had a long and successful relationship. Netflix recently released episodes of the Emmy-winning animated anthology Love, Death, & Robots, which Fincher executive produces. Another recent success was their film collaboration, Mank, which netted Fincher his third Best Director Oscar nomination.

If Netflix wants to keep the David Fincher train going, they’re probably going to be more than happy to distribute whatever project he wants to work on next. So, if Fincher is ready for Mindhunter Season 3, expect Netflix to back him, even if it has been six years.
For what it’s worth, other series stars have also expressed their interest in returning and completing the story. Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv would all likely be back for more and to study some of the most infamous serial killers of our time.
