The NBA has opened an investigation into Memphis guard Ja Morant reportedly using his hands to mimic a gun towards the Golden State Warriors bench on Wednesday.
The incident reportedly occurred during a timeout in the final 20 seconds of the game. The 25-year-old walked towards the opposition bench and formed an imaginary gun with his hands, leading to technical fouls for himself and Warriors guard Buddy Hield, who is similarly being investigated.
ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania described the incident as ‘finger gun motions’.

Morant has twice been suspended by the NBA for brandishing a firearm on his social media channels. In 2023 he was suspended for what ultimately ended up being eight games for revealing a gun on a live Instagram feed while partying in Denver.
He was then suspended for the first 25 games of the following season after doing it once again.
Morant took to social media to express his bemusement at the situation.
He followed that tweet up with a second, saying “god bless y’all”.

It has been a tumultuous few weeks for the Grizzlies, who fired coach Taylor Jenkins only a fortnight out from another playoff run.
Outspoken NBA personality Stephen A Smith has called for the league to stop over-policing the point guard.
Morant and the Grizzlies sit sixth in the Western Conference with a 44-32 record, stuck in a log jam of teams with two weeks remaining in the NBA regular season.
Memphis travels to Miami to face the Heat on Friday, before facing the Pistons in Detroit on Sunday.
