Adobe Photoshop is one of the most widely known and used photo-editing tools. Despite being around for over 30 years, Photoshop has never had a dedicated mobile app — until now.
On Tuesday, Adobe announced that Photoshop is finally coming to mobile, packaging its image editing and design features into an app. Adobe said the app was designed from the ground up to be an intuitive, accessible, mobile-friendly interface that everyone can download for free. There’s also free access to in-app features.

“We’re excited to bring the limitless creative possibilities of Photoshop to mobile, making the app’s iconic image editing and design capabilities accessible for everyone from professional artists and designers to a whole new generation of creators trying Photoshop for the first time,” said Ashley Still, SVP, digital media at Adobe.
The app will launch on iPhone today, with Android coming later this year. The free features are robust and include many Photoshop editing tools, including combining, composting, and blending images with selections, layers, and masks, the spot healing brush, and access to thousands of free Adobe Stock assets.

Free users even have access to Generative Fill and Generative Expand. These Firefly-supported AI features have gone viral on social media because they are powerful editing tools that let users expand images beyond their original bounds. Users can use the tools to fill in what’s missing or remove an element in an image.
Another standout feature all users can access is a Tap Select tool that makes it easy to edit photos on mobile by tapping on the object you want to highlight, instead of using tools like Lasso to outline every object you want to select.
It might seem like using Photoshop on your phone would be extremely challenging because of all the different features available. However, from a demo I had of the app, it is clear that Adobe has put lots of thought into the user interface. Everything seemed readily accessible and simple to navigate. As a novice Photoshop user who can be overwhelmed by the desktop layout, I thought the app was a less intimidating alternative.

Because the Photoshop mobile experience is meant to sync seamlessly with the other Adobe Creative Cloud apps, users can easily access their workflows with Adobe Express, Adobe Fresco, and Adobe Lightroom.
In addition, Photoshop on the web has been updated to be a complimentary interface from mobile. This feature means you can easily access a smartphone project on your computer, even if you don’t have Photoshop downloaded on the desktop.
To access this experience, users can subscribe to a new Photoshop Mobile and Web plan, which retails at $7.99 or $69.99 annually. The plan also unlocks premium mobile features. The premium features include expanded access to Firefly tools, including Generate Similar and Reference Image in the Photoshop web experience, more than 20,000 fonts, Object Select, Magic Wand, Remove Tool, Clone Stamp, and more.

Existing Photoshop plans already included access to Photoshop on iPad and the web, but will now also include access to Photoshop on mobile, including the premium features.
